Rishi Sunak has started his election campaign in character – with failures. No wonder his fellow Tories are upset with him.
Firstly, he had to admit that there won’t be any flights taking refugees to Rwanda before the election happens and a new government can put a stop to them, once and for all.
This was the Tories’ flagship distraction tactic – a policy that would never have achieved its stated aim of stopping criminal gangs from making huge profits by putting asylum-seekers into flimsy boats that were barely capable of crossing the Channel. That was not what it was for.

This time it was not to be.
Instead, it will provide Sunak’s opponents with an opportunity to mock him, every day until we go to the polls.
Secondly, Scottish First Minister John Swinney has attacked Sunak’s choice of July 4 as polling day, because it is in the first week of the Scottish school summer holidays.
He was implying that it would cause huge disruption to Scottish parents, but this had not figured in Sunak’s calculations. ” He said the impact on Scots “will not have been given a moment’s thought”.
The accusation rings true.
Sunak now goes into his election campaign lame from two clear failures.
