This was all covered in the (still brilliant) 1980s sit-com Yes, Prime Minister. Here’s how the military were said to respond to the idea of conscription then:
And did you spot the reference to 80 per cent of Swedish people saying they’d recommend National Service? Here’s how Yes, Prime Minister responded to that, 40-odd years before Sunak spat it out:
The whole idea is utter rubbish.
And the public seems to think so, too – without any nudging from these clips.
Someone from the i newspaper went out and asked, and these were the responses:
With ideas like this, the Tories are going to sink without trace on July 4.
