Will the new Tory leader be Iain Duncan Smith? The failed Tory leader of 2001-2003? The former work and pensions minister whose changes to sickness benefit and disability benefit assessments ruined thousands of lives and whose Universal Credit was a laughing-stock for years?

It seems so – if only on an interim basis.

Reports suggest that Rishi Sunak does not want to be Conservative leader if an early Budget is announced in September, and Tory leadership hopefuls are preparing to launch their bids before the summer recess – but some Tories have said the contest should go long – lasting not just through August but to the end of the year.

The suggestion has incensed some – including one of the candidates who challenged him for the Chingford & Woodford Green Parliamentary seat earlier this month:

She makes a good point – although if she had beaten Duncan Smith, there are still plenty of Tory MPs of similar skill (hardly any) available to take on the role.
