It seems the Mirror is jumping the gun here: is it wishful thinking that Liz Kendall is scrapping these benefit penalties?
The paper reckons Liz Kendall, the new Work and Pensions Secretary, has attacked the previous government’s proposal to strip Universal Credit and PIP recipients of their benefits if they didn’t find work within a year.
But here’s what she said:
She told The Sun that the DWP will ensure “people after 12 months without genuine support” are not left in the lurch. And she pledged to “get Britain working again”.

She went on to say: “The problem with what the Tories proposed was after 12 months to do this. We are not leaving people 12 months without genuine engagement and support.” She stressed that “there have always been conditions to look for work and consequences.
To This Writer, that’s Liz Kendall saying the former (Tory) government had done little or nothing to help people find work in their first 12 months of claiming Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment.
She isn’t saying she’ll remove the harshest sanctions; rather, she is saying she will sanction people who are still on those benefits after 12 months, if they don’t follow instructions to take jobs.
So it seems to me that the message from Kendall to UC and PIP claimants is this:
If you haven’t quit the benefit after 12 months, we’ll force you to take the first work we offer you.
