The Conservative Party has introduced a penalty system to keep its leadership campaign from descending into personal attacks and recriminations. But will this ‘yellow card’ system stop Tories badmouthing each other?
As predicted, Priti Patel, Kemi Badenoch and Mel Stride have joined Robert Jenrick, Tom Tugendhat and James Cleverly in the contest to become leader of what little Opposition exists against Keir Starmer’s Labour government.
Apparently, not only did they have to get endorsements from 10 other Conservative MPs but another condition, according to the BBC, was to raise £200,000 for the party. Draw your own conclusions from that!

And Bob Blackman the (relatively) new chairman of the Tory backbench 1922 committee who is overseeing the contest, has now declared that
he will give a yellow card and a public dressing down to any candidate who attacks a rival.
“Constant backbiting and attacking colleagues” by Tory MPs during the last parliament was a key reason “why the party did so badly in the general election”, Mr Blackman said.
“If candidates indulge” in personal attacks “I will get involved obviously to warn them and if necessary, issue a public statement”.
“If a yellow card is issued and a statement made to the public and to the members, that a candidate has infringed on the rules, that will be extremely detrimental to their chances of getting elected,” he said.
The imposition of this system corresponds with a new sanction regime extending to all Tory MPs and party members:
The party’s chief whip will reprimand MPs engaging in personal attacks during the race and the party chairman will step in where ex-MPs are involved.
This Writer certainly supports the principle of the new system. In fact, I would support its extension to anything Tory representatives say to or about other political parties’ members and policies – or indeed anything at all.
Then we might be able to enjoy a peaceful summer as silence descends upon the Tories.
