Government has triggered emergency prison anti-overcrowding measures

The government has triggered emergency prison anti-overcrowding measures after more than 1,000 people were arrested for participating in riots across the UK.

These are not the measures that were discussed immediately after Labour took power but before the riots took effect. Plans to release prisoners who have served only two-fifths of their sentences are still on the drawing-board.

These are measures that were already in place – and that the Tories invoked as recently as May, according to the BBC (other news sources are available).

They mean defendants waiting for a court appearance – who are considered too dangerous to be bailed – will be kept in police cells until prison space is available.

The system is known as Operation Early Dawn. Why? What a nonsense of a name!

It has not been triggered across the whole of the UK. The regions affected are:

  • North East and Yorkshire

  • Cumbria and Lancashire

  • Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire

  • East and West Midlands

It’s good to see the BBC report stating

The riots erupted following the spread of misinformation online after three girls were killed in Southport

because that is how This Site has been describing the situation. Presumably somebody at the Beeb is taking notes!

The policy to keep people in police cells until they can go to court was suggested last week and This Writer recalls some resistance, on the grounds that it would mean less – or no – room to lock up people who are arrested for other offences, in the normal course of police work.

The government is saying that will not be a problem. Time will tell…
