Beware misleading headlines about Kemi Badenoch and Doctor Who! The press are misleading us again.

This Writer was expecting to hear that she had attacked the iconic BBC drama for being woke, lefty nonsense – or some such tripe.

In fact, Badenoch launched her Tory leadership campaign by renewing her feud with Doctor Who actor David Tennant over transgender rights.

When Mr Tennant gave his acceptance speech at the British LGBT Awards, he expressed his frustration with her stance on transgender and women’s rights, saying, “I don’t wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up”.

It was part of a broader criticism of her views and policies, particularly her stance on defining sex based on biological sex in the Equality Act.

Badenoch responded by accusing Tennant of being a “rich, lefty, white male celebrity so blinded by ideology” and stated that she would not be silenced.

Well, she kept that promise – but may live to wish she hadn’t.

I’ll discuss the problem with her stance below but first, here’s what she actually said:

Ms Badenoch said: “No I will not shut up, when you have that kind of cultural establishment trying to keep Conservatives down, you need someone like me who is not afraid of Doctor Who or whoever; who is going to take the fight to them and not let them try to keep us down. That is not going to happen with me.”

Firstly, she has proved the truth of the old adage that one should keep one’s mouth shut and let people assume one is an idiot, rather than speaking up and proving it: Doctor Who is the title of the TV show – not the main character’s actual name.

Secondly, she did a typically right-wing – in fact, fascist – thing by attacking trans people: she attacked a minority group. Far-right populists do this because they think they’ll get popular support if they give the people an enemy.

How absolutely pathetic.

Mr Tennant was right in his wish for Badenoch to be de-platformed – although his comment that he didn’t want her to exist anymore was unwise.

There is no place in an enlightened society for the divisive claptrap peddled by this Conservative.
