He would, wouldn't he?

Grenfell Inquiry may not be the huge let-down it seems

The result of the Grenfell Inquiry may not be the huge let-down it seems at first sight.

When This Writer heard the inquiry had blamed failings in government (national and local) and industry going back over decades for the inferno that claimed 72 lives, I thought it would be another under-the-carpet job; everything that mattered brushed away nice and neat. “It was all because of things that happened a long time ago. There’s nothing to be done now.”

If you thought the same, and had the same feeling of anticlimax, this may help you sleep more easily:

  • The government will speed up the removal of unsafe cladding from UK residential buildings.
  • Companies found to have been part of the failings are to be barred from winning government commercial contracts.
  • The construction industry will be reformed so that homes are made with safe materials and not dangerous cladding.
  • The government intends to ensure that tenants are never ignored again, and social landlords are held to account for the safety of their homes.

Oh, and…

Nineteen companies or organisations are currently under criminal investigation, along with 58 individuals – although final decisions on potential charges will not be made until the end of 2026.

The question, though, is…

Will any of it happen?
