Tory donation acceptance is support for racism – isn’t it?

This Tory donation acceptance is support for racism – isn’t it? The money came from businessman Frank Hester, who allegedly said in 2019 that Labour MP Diane Abbott made him “want to hate all black women” and “should be shot”.

The £5 million donation came five days before then-prime minister Rishi Sunak [pictured] called this year’s general election, and two months after Hester was accused.

At the time of the accusations, Sunak said the comments attributed to Hester were “racist” and “wrong” but refused to return money he had donated previously.

We’re learning about this latest gift now because there is a three-month lag before the Electoral Commission make political donations public knowledge.

Hester’s £5m donation in May followed £150,000 accepted in March, £5m in January and £10m donated to the party last year, totalling more than £20m since the start of 2023. Oh, and let’s not forget the helicopter he gifted Sunak for a political visit in November 2023, valued at £15,900.

No wonder a Labour source said: “The Tories election campaign was funded by cash from a man who made abhorrent, racist comments.”

And Ms Abbott herself said: “It demonstrates that they are not serious about opposing racism and it may also mean they are desperate for money.”

Apparently Hester apologised for his words after they became public knowledge, and Rishi Sunak refused to return his donations because he said the businessman had shown genuine contrition.

He would, wouldn’t he? £20,165,900 is a lot of money, even to the richest man in the United Kingdom.

But what do you think? Was the Tory election campaign funded by racism? Does it taint everyone who voted for the Conservatives, because they were supporting a party held up by a racist? Should there be an independent investigation, to find out how deeply racism runs in the Conservative Party?

Many years ago, Spitting Image had Margaret Thatcher saying:

“There’s no room for racists in our party. It’s chock-a-block as it is.”
