They’re saying it was conciliatory, but Iran’s response to Saturday’s missile attack is a verbal dig at Israel.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are said to have targeted missile factories and other sites near Tehran and western Iran in a missile barrage early on Saturday – killing four Iranian soldiers.
This was in a widely-expected retaliation for an Iranian barrage of almost 200 ballistic missiles fired towards Israel on 1 October.
And that attack was itself a retaliation after Israel murdered Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh on Iranian soil in July.

It has been suggested that Israel had been planning a much larger attack, but heeded warnings from Washington to rein in plans that would have caused maximum pain to the Iranian authorities.
So far, Iran has limited its response to this latest attack to words: it has a responsibility to defend itself, but added that Iran “recognises its responsibilities towards regional peace and security”.
Conciliatory? Maybe – because it says Iran doesn’t want to escalate hostilities to war.
But it is also provocative, because it suggests that Israel has been trying to provoke a regional war – which is, on the face of it, true.
It makes Israel look bad. And that’s important in the propaganda war that underlies all of these Middle East missile operations; it colours the opinions of each side’s more powerful backers.
