Labour is holding back £125 million of a pothole-fixing budget ‘as an incentive’

Labour is holding back £125 million of a pothole-fixing budget ‘as an incentive’ for councils to make progress.

The government is increasing the amount of money available for road maintenance in England by £500 million – to £1.6 billion – for the financial year starting in April 2025 – but part of it is contingent on councils showing that they are getting on with the job.

The extra cash is said to be what it would cost to fix an additional seven million potholes, beyond what councils can do with the existing budget.

And the government has said it is going to make sure authorities spend the money wisely and maintain roads to avoid further potholes.

Apparently this is because Keir Starmer wants his government to focus on people’s daily frustrations. RAC figures suggest that drivers encounter an average of six potholes per mile on England’s roads, and may spend up to £500 on vehicle repairs because of pothole damage.

It seems that Big Brother is watching what councils do, on behalf of the Nanny State.
