Will the benefits budget pay for new defence spending increases? That seems to be the direction of travel, if we’re to believe this short debate from the BBC’sĀ Politics Live:

Labour government representative Natalie Fleet did her very best to avoid the question of how her bosses are going to find the money for another 0.5 per cent (of gross national income) increase in the defence budget.

But with “welfare” – they mean the benefits budget – on the table immediately, can there be any doubt that the government is already salivating at the thought of carving it up?

The benefits budget is administered by the Department for Work and Pensions, which is currently run by Secretary of State Liz Kendall [pictured].

She is already planning to peel Ā£3 billion away from disabled people in an exercise that we already know is intended purely to save money at the expense of UK citizens’ health.

The question now is: who, here, are they going to butcher next, so they can fight a war abroad?
