We need something better than the Labour Poverty Tax

The mood of the nation suggests that we need something better than the Labour Poverty Tax – but what should it be?

Opposition to plans for sickness and disability benefits to be cut for people who cannot work, and increased for those who can, in order to remove £5 billion from the UK’s benefits budget, has led to panic meetings in Downing Street between prime minister Keir Starmer and Labour MPs.

He seems determined to push through this unpopular policy that will undoubtedly lead to the deaths of many thousands of vulnerable people through starvation or suicide; they are obviously not so keen.

He wants us all to think there is no alternative, even though some of us have been saying for some time that there clearly are other options.

But it’s all very well saying that. The challenge is to actually suggest something.
