Neoliberal politicians shower themselves in shame with the benefits system

Our neoliberal politicians shower themselves in shame with the benefits system, don’t they?

They have been trying to stamp on the faces of benefit claimants since the days of Thatcher. New Labour made it worse with the work capability assessment and ESA. The Tories tightened the screws with Universal Credit and the Personal Independence Payment, loosened them a little when they lost a lot of court cases and we realised how many people their policies were killing, and now Labour wants to squeeze disabled people and the mentally-ill until the pips squeak.

The day before current Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall [pictured] is due to reveal the latest torture plans, the BBC decided to publish a piece in which she claims that her changes are going to be fair. All was going well until the penultimate paragraph, which states:

The previous Conservative government had explored making it harder for younger people with mental health conditions to claim PIP.

Not “making it harder for younger people with faked mental health conditions”, you notice.

It gives the game away. There is no “moral mission” here. There isn’t even a desire to save money – the best way to do that would be to fix the problems that mean people end up having to claim the benefits in the first place. That would be too much like hard work.

So just remember, no matter what Liz Kendall says on Tuesday, March 18, 2025…

It will be drivel.
