This Site’s long-term friend, Samuel Miller advocates for UN oversight of the DWP to protect Britons at risk in this article from My Disability Studies Blackboard.
Here are the details:
The recent announcement by the Labour government to implement £5 billion in welfare cuts has sent shockwaves through Britain, particularly among its most vulnerable citizens.
These cuts, targeting the sick and disabled, threaten to dismantle the fragile safety net that many rely on for survival. The consequences are not merely financial; they are deeply human, with lives hanging in the balance.

In light of this dire situation, Canadian advocate Samuel Miller has proposed a bold and unprecedented solution: the intervention of the United Nations or an international human rights organization to take control of the DWP.
Such a move, while extraordinary, underscores the severity of the crisis. It reflects a growing recognition that the welfare of Britain’s most vulnerable cannot be left to chance or political expediency.
As the world watches, the question remains: will Britain rise to the challenge of protecting its most vulnerable, or will it allow them to be swept aside in the name of austerity?
It would be a great idea. Sadly, the United Nations has made many attempts to get the UK to change direction – only to be rebuffed, every time.
The latest rejections were over the very ‘reforms’ about which Mr Miller made his proposal.
The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) has urged the UK government to implement “corrective measures” to mitigate the adverse effects of welfare reforms on disabled individuals.
The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) has criticized the UK’s benefits system, stating that it “demonises” disabled people and causes “trauma and preventable mental distress.”
And the UK government faced criticism for not attending a UN review session on disability rights, leading to accusations of not prioritizing the rights of disabled individuals.
So I think it is reasonable to say that Mr Miller’s appeal, while it may be welcomed by the UN, will fall on deaf ears in Westminster.
But there is a way it can help. Publicity.
The more people like Mr Miller stand up – around the world – and say this is wrong, the more ill-feeling will grow against this policy, and the more unpalatable it will become.
Governments rely on public goodwill; they can’t survive without it.
So share this story – internationally. We can make this plan collapse beneath the weight of public outrage.
