Children walking through rubble during declared Gaza ceasefire window.

Words are not enough: UK government trails behind as Gaza suffers

UK politicians are talking in circles while bombs continue to fall on Gaza – even during so-called “humanitarian pauses”.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have announced a daily 10-hour pause in military operations to allow aid into Gaza.

But BBC Verify quickly exposed the illusion: an Israeli airstrike hit Gaza City within the declared pause window, in a zone the IDF had explicitly designated for relief. The IDF claimed ignorance.

So much for a ceasefire.

And yet, from Westminster we’ve heard nothing but the familiar chorus of concern and cautious diplomacy.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer acknowledged the “indefensible” violence and starvation in Gaza, calling for recognition of a Palestinian state—but only as part of a broader, long-term plan.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy echoed those sentiments, saying the IDF’s pause was “essential but long overdue,” and urging for “access to aid… over the coming hours and days.”

Talk. Delay. Repeat.

These carefully crafted statements come after months of UK reluctance to confront the Israeli leadership with anything beyond polite criticism.

There’s still no talk of sanctions.

No suspension of arms sales.

And recognition of Palestine remains a vague promise for a later date—while children die now.

Meanwhile, the UN, aid groups, and journalists on the ground are watching a disaster unfold in real time.

Airstrikes continue.

Food is scarce.

Medical supplies are vanishing.

Even in areas supposedly “safe” for aid delivery, civilians are under threat.

This isn’t a “pathway to peace” – it is a loop of international hand-wringing, while those with power refuse to wield it.

With every new announcement, it becomes clearer: humanitarian corridors are meaningless if they’re bombed.

Ceasefires are hollow if they’re ignored.

And UK foreign policy is empty if it can’t even hold its allies to account.

The world is watching while Starmer and Lammy are still just whispering.
