Paris has shown us the importance of protecting police funding in London
As unprotected government departments await the results of the Comprehensive Spending Review this week, protecting funding for the police across the UK has never been more vital.
The devastating attacks on Paris last week brought home the importance of protecting police funding in the capital. Last Friday I wrote to the home secretary, urging her to do all she can to protect police numbers and ensure that the Met are adequately resourced to protect the capital.
Since the attacks on Paris there has been an open and welcome debate on the number of trained firearms officers in the UK, which has decreased by over 1,000 since 2009.
It is essential that London is able to properly respond to a roaming terrorist attack, and the commissioner has stated he will increase the number of officers trained in firearm use.
However in addition to specialist resources it is also imperative that there is trust between the police and the communities they serve. Neighbourhood policing has played an integral role in creating confidence and co-operation between the public and the police.

Are we to believe that France and Paris in particular didn’t have sufficient Police ‘boots on the ground’ to make inroads into these – how many terrorists groups, 4 ? You could have the Army patrolling the streets of London and it would make very little difference to the likelihood of an attack. The Paris attacks were a catastrophe of ineffectiveness against ISIS. And as for the public providing nuggets of info via PCSOs for the use of the Police and Security services. . . . the jaw drops in utter disbelief. The Left mistrusts and disbelieves the Police (particularly the Met) in so many situations that one wonders why you choose to believe what they have to say in this instance. They practice the infiltration – and worse – of left leaning groups and now you suggest that their capabilities should be increased. Why weren’t those undercover officers doing something useful in the years and years that they were so employed. Did they believe that Greenpeace were going to do something very, very naughty? ? Give that 30 minutes thought and report back.
