Brexipocalypse: May threatens martial law if she doesn’t get her contradictory way
Theresa May’s Brexit policy seems designed to ruin both the prime minister and her party. Can anybody understand the reasons?
She is demanding that MPs – and the country as a whole – accept her rubbish “deal” with the European Union because time is running out and the only alternative she is prepared to accept is “no deal”, forcing us to apply to the World Trade Organisation for permission to use its – basic – rules.
But Marcus, below, makes a very pertinent point:
How is it that the government is saying it may run of time and is preparing for a catastrophic no deal in March when…
IT SET THE MARCH DEADLINE?

I think we may conclude that Mrs May really does want to remove the UK from the EU before this country becomes subject to new EU-wide laws on tax evasion; she wants to ensure that the very rich can’t be forced to contribute to the wealth of the nation; she wants to ensure that there is no money for social policies that help ordinary people. That seems the only reason for sticking to this deadline when it is clear that more time is needed.
We also know that she is deliberately running down the clock, making “no deal” more likely. This may be because she is unduly influenced by the hard-right European Research Group headed by Jacob Rees-Mogg, which would prefer such an outcome. It would explain Mr Rees-Mogg’s about-turn from demanding her resignation to supporting her. But Marcus (again) points out that this will have a serious effect on her party’s electoral chances:
Theresa May can steer the country to a catastrophic No Deal Brexit. It will be a Pyrrhic victory because not only will it be a catastrophe for the country, it will finish the Tory Party for a generation. But what person in their right mind would do this? Is May in her right mind?

Good question.
Put these elements together and it may be easier to understand why Mrs May is planning to deploy 3,500 soldiers onto the streets of the UK in the event of a “no-deal” Brexit. Martial law would preserve her government – sorry, dictatorship – against the civil unrest that her policies seem certain to provoke.
These are dangerous times.
We have a national leader who knows she is on borrowed time – but we have seen that she is desperate to cling on to power for its own sake.
And we have a Parliament whose members seem determined to keep her in government – not because it is good for the country as a whole but in order to allow her to do as much harm as possible.
And I haven’t even mentioned the compliant Tory news media that are trying to keep you tranquillised and complacent, quietly accepting it as Mrs May pushes you into personal debt and strips away the rights that have been built up over the centuries to protect you from people like her.
I’m surprised every MP in Westminster isn’t being bombarded by demands from an electorate insisting that they do everything they can to prevent either of the results that Mrs May favours.
She says she is acting in the national interest, but it is clear that she is only interested in herself.
What are you waiting for? You need to talk to your MP.
This borders on the utterly unbelievable. This woman needs to be taken away by the “men in white coats” – I question her sanity.
I agree but make sure she has a straight jacket on just in case she tries to use her claws to dig into the doorway . . .
It’s time that Labour steped up and did it’s job as the official opposition instead of aiding and abetting the Tories
So -Corbyn tables a MONC -No10. responds with ‘run along and play ‘ -we are in the middle of a right wing coup d’etat.
Shouldn’t we be writing to the armed forces Chiefs of Staff and telling them not to support this nonsense?
What, ask them to disobey orders? I think you misunderstand how the military works.
whose orders though? i thought they fought for QUEEN AND COUNTRY not one person like a PM? i am hoping they remember who cut their numbers so drastically leaving them less able to defend US. WE ARE the country after all.ALL OF US.not just that lot in Westminster. sick of hearing the rhetoric she says, she wants, she decided, what do we have MP’s for? I’ve heard them ,mine included, getting up in the commons and practically begging that woman to think of HER citizens. the ones she is supposed to represent. so many wanting a peoples vote but SHE dont want that. so WE dont get whats rightfully ours. the whole thing was done on lie after lie back in 2016. surely should be something in the law books that says this is illegal.
no man is an island. it should be the decision of the whole of parliament. beginning to think she has some hold on all her MP’s.
No, you need to get out on the streets.
The first demonstration is 12 January, 2019, at 12:00 pm
Assemble at: BBC Portland Place – nearest tube Oxford Circus
BRITAIN IS BROKEN
GENERAL ELECTION NOW
#YellowVestsAgainstAusterity
Organisers: The People’s Assembly Against Austerity
January 12 May be too late.
And weren’t the Yellow Vests adopted in the UK by right-wingers?
Exactly we need to be out there now sod Christmas.
Have we got 3,500 troops?/sarc.
Maybe not but the EU has and what with the EU military Unification going on behind our backs perhaps it will be an EU military creating the Police State/Marshall Law?
This woman is dangerously insane. She is already killing off the poor and infirm. She obviously fears a revolution which is why she is considering deploying troops. It will be another Paris. Perhaps she is hoping to finish off the remaining poor and infirm?
The woman NEEDS to go. She’s a prize winning bitch.
I loathe the woman as much as anyone, all the Tories, but why resort to misogyny? >:(
“How is it that the government is saying it may run of time and is preparing for a catastrophic no deal in March when…

Only in the sense that they had two years from when Article 50 was triggered.
I agree with the rest of the article though
And who triggered Article 50?
Yes I know but could have been made clearer that they didn’t need to trigger Article 50. Just sayin’
Figgghhhhht!! It’s on!! We can take them!! It’s our country not their cashcow!!
all this army on the street talk would only serve to kill off the tory party. labour need to step up with all parties after the bill iso defeated. n.I. won’t vote for her. even if she wins by a whisker she will be seen by the public as the weakestandard priminister ever..then a people’s vote will be inevitable. …chesss game over..check mate.
If the troops get turned on the people of this country how long before all the ‘redundant armed forces get involved! There are many who will escalate any orders to the army into all out civil war and mayhem
their all out in the far east i think.

If you want to know what may be in the pipeline, I urge you to read part 2 (Emergency Powers) of the Civil Contingency Act 2004 (it’s not long ~ 10pp) which describes the legislatiion that already exists – set up by Tony Blair, as it happens.
This is nothing to do with the replacememnt for Emergency Planning (that’s part 1 of said Act), but is intended to deal with any form of civil strife – just like Brexit.. Makes me wonder if May found what was up her sleeve and has been planning to keep the law in reserve, just in case Remoaners (or any other bodies) get uppity!
May has re-created our past history – Protestants v. Catholics, Cavaliers v. Roundheads, to be joined by Brexiteers v. Remoaners. The fact remains, 17M voted out, from The People – an electorate of 47M. The 63% who did not vote out are being dragged around by the 37% minority who did: how’s that for “democracy”, eh, Tories?
So now we hear Putin backs Brexit. He says it’s true democracy. Putin and democracy. The two words are incompatible. We know he’s trying to weaken the western alliance. This is the proof.
The only good thing about this (besides that I think the martial law idea’s a somewhat propagandist use of the facts, there’s nothing to say that’s the point at all) is that once she’s screwed the Tory chances for a decade or two the Labour party can (with the right pressure) pass laws that emulate the EU anti tax evasion regime down to the last semicolon. Not just that but we’ll be free to nationalise stuff and hold it all together so it works without being forced to break every process into a dozen pieces for the sharks to be allowed ‘fair’ chances to hijack the bits they think might be profitable. You wait, own grave being dug, accidental freedom being bestowed and retribution on its way.
3500 troops could not enforce martial law on a country of 60 million. The British Army had 20,000 soldiers on the streets of the six counties during the troubles and they still had to do a deal with the IRA to get out of the quagmire.
If thats what she’s thinking of she’s deluded. But let her try. She could well end up in front of a firing squad.
