Iceland wants Nordic countries to declare a climate emergency. Corbyn has offered his support
After his success in getting the UK to declare a climate emergency, Jeremy Corbyn has written to support Iceland’s moves towards a similar declaration.
Icelandic prime minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir is seeking backing for a declaration of a climate emergency, including at next week’s Nordic Council meeting.
In his letter to her, Mr Corbyn stated: “Soon after we met, I moved the successful motion agreed in the UK parliament for the declaration of a climate emergency in May.
“As I said at the time, we pledge to work as closely as possible with countries that are serious about ending the climate catastrophe.
“The impact of the climate crisis on Iceland is already clear, and I know you are taking part in the landmark memorial for OK Glacier today.
“In the debate on the declaration of a climate emergency, I argued: ‘We have the chance to act before it’s too late. It’s a chance that won’t be available to succeeding generations. It is our historic duty to take it.’
“I know you share those sentiments, and the urgent responsibility on all of us to recognise that the climate crisis is a global emergency, and to act to bring about a swift and just transition to a net-zero economy.”

Of course, Jeremy Corbyn is not currently in office in the United Kingdom. If you want to know what Boris Johnson is doing about climate change, the answer is easy: He’s worsening it.
