Coronavirus: Disabled people to be denied ventilators as NHS imposes rationing

Not enough ventilators: is Boris Johnson using the fact that he deliberately chose not to stock up on these vital items of equipment as an excuse to ensure that disabled people die of coronavirus?

The lack of ventilators in the National Health Service means they will be provided to people on the basis of their chance of survival. If you are disabled, this means: NOT YOU.

As I reported – only yesterday (March 29) – hospitals in the United States are already doing this, and the guidance they have been given means people with Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and other disabilities simply won’t get a look-in.

Personally, I have to question whether Boris Johnson was aiming for this – or something like it – from the moment he was first told about Covid-19. Consider:

That’s right: that recommendation to buy ventilators and protective equipment was ignored because they cost too much.

Johnson’s first briefing about the disease was in November last year. He did nothing.

According to Simon Wren-Lewis’s Mainly Macro and an article in The Times, “Chris Whitty warned the cabinet in January that other countries might experience this pandemic, but Boris Johnson’s instincts were to resist a life changing crackdown, and Dominic Cummings agreed.” They did nothing.

“It seems that so convinced were both politicians that nothing needed to be done that they failed to do what any good politician should do, and plan for contingencies. The time that was lost in those days before the “herd immunity” strategy was changed is the key to why so many things have gone so horribly wrong since.

“These range from minor, like Johnson continuing to shake hands, to critical failings like not ramping up testing capacity (the UK was among the first to develop a test, but is testing far fewer than other countries), not ordering more ventilators until dangerously late, a failure to deliver protective equipment to all doctors and nurses well before they were needed and the complete failure to quickly unroll a public information campaign.”

Here’s the relevant part of the Times article:

Johnson was warned to take action by The Lancet on January 24 and he did nothing.

When the virus hit the UK, he did as little as he could – and made no contingency plans.

Here’s Mainly Macro again: “Even after 16th March the Prime Minister followed the suppression strategy in a half hearted manner. What he should have done, as soon as was possible, was to impose something close to the maximum degree of suppression immediately. Instead it came in a piecemeal fashion: The Prime Minister kept saying “when the time was right” at his press conferences. Instead of trying to get the pandemic under control as soon as possible, it seemed he was trying to squash the curve by just enough to ensure hospitals were not overrun.”

And now we don’t have enough equipment to treat everybody who needs it, and people with disabilities are set to die.

That’s after 10 years in which people with disabilities were systematically demonised, othered and persecuted by Conservative and Conservative-led governments.

As Mainly Macro states, “No scientist would want to stop a government, on seeing the first cases of COVID-19 in the UK in mid-February, distributing PPE equipment to medics, ordering new ventilators and ramping up testing capacity. That this didn’t happen in the UK until mid-March is, as the Lancet suggests, a national scandal.”

But it is possible that – if the only victims are people with disabilities – that scandal will be ignored. How do you feel about that?

I agree with the comment that it is not surprising that this Conservative government are doing what they can to demonise those of us that are born or acquire disabilities of one form or other, We have had over TEN Years of being treated so different.
We are being stripped of our HUMAN RIGHT’S and treated as third or forth class Citizens, This was brought about by some MINISTERS who classify us as a LIABILITY rather than an ASSET/ So we have been LAMBASTED for a decade.
And then to think Mr IDS and the past Chancellor of the 11 DOWNING STREET Mr Hammond they even had the Audacity to think them selves as being the Pied piper for those with DISABILITIES OR DIFFICULTIES, we did not chose to have these complication which we have too live with on a daily basis.
When will the governments see us as a group of people first and give us the same opportunities that others take for granted.
Its like EMPLOYMENT we are used as PAWNS to those organisations that are supposed to help you, they are only interested in getting that MONEY from the GOVERNMENT.
These for profit organisations are only interested in building there BANK BALANCES
and can find whose with DISABILITIES OR DIFFICULTIES the worst or —- Jobs with little opportunities of continuity of employment or prospects.
We are used as a means of STATISTICS rather than treated as valued as a group of people.
So this does not surprise us as a group of people it just a matter what is next, Even the TWO TICK SYMBOL is not worth the paper it is written on its better used as Toilet Paper. Because the PUBLIC and PRIVATE organisations or companies have not got the time for those of us with DISABILITIES or DIFFICULTIES.
This means that there is so much HIDDEN DISCRIMINATION is being used so we end up on the BENEFITS. (NOT GOOD).

It’s been obvious that the “do nothing” was just the shop window. Inside, under the grubby counter, in a brown wrapper , the eugenics plan was in full flow. Remember the “young will be ok” message? They were the prime vectors, only stopped when Macron (Macron???) said to stop it. The science didnt change. Nor did the desire by Cummings (who apparently overrode the Cabinet) to keep on killing the inferior change until it became obviously and internationally exposed as deranged. It had been deniably deranged over the last 10 years.

Hi, can you tell me where it says anything about disabled people in the UK being denied ventilators? The only source you appear to give is the Daily Mail article, which says only that people with no chance of survival will not be ventilated. You imply that the UK will follow the US and say “people with Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and other disabilities simply won’t get a look-in”. Could you explain why any of these come under the US guidelines of “severe mental retardation, advanced dementia or severe traumatic brain injury”?

My PiP is up in Aug, this year and I got the form 7th of march. Nine days after the date on the forms. So I had just over two weeks to get all my info together and get help with the book (forms) My appointments have been cancelled due to the virus, no letters of further evidence could be sent to me. Then we had lock down.
Luckily enough I have the evidence and more for the DWP.

I managed to post my forms back before the lock down, how many people could not?
I feel they intentionally brought this forward knowing the problems it would cause people like me.
Why did they send my forms almost six months early if not?
Then I read the above and people wonder why I am paranoid.
I as well as my physical disabilities I am also dyslaxic so excuse the bad gramma.
    regards.

    hi mike
In regard to the governments new drive to crack down on social media aka FAKE NEWS ……..why do they and MSM keep bulls**tting the blatant lie that employees will get 80% of their income ? Fundamentally untrue as i am PAYE and been informed i do not qualify .I was informed not to go to work on the 24th march and on the 26th my assignment was terminated .Informed by my agency i am a tier 3 agency worker on a flexible colleague contract and therefore not eligible and as my assignment ended i am not eligible for SSP either .I pay tax and NI but dont get any benefits my co workers enjoy, classing me a second class citizen but now im even worse ………..persona non grata
    keep up the good work

I am in receipt of the NHS infamous letter of vulnerability and need to isolate myself. Reading the same messages as above on media I regard these letters as my being on their radar screen for not getting any recovery services hence rigid isolation as being the only way to save myself from the Virus. There is no way I want to drown to death slowly and would put forward Parliament having another go at getting a quick painless death back on the agenda. I have personal family experience of the Liverpool Path and its duplicated replacement laughable called Care Path ie death be starvation and no fluids. I would not treat my animals end of life as currently offered and now would be a good time to offer a better way of dying…..especially as no airlines to Switzerland.
