Patel defies reality again as she compares Covid-19 with a space hopper

Priti Patel: is this smile her version of ‘duper’s delight’? The only reasonable explanation she can possibly have for the wild claims she has made is if she knows she’s lying.

Perhaps Priti Patel thought doing the morning press junket would rehabilitate her image after she was publicly shamed for tweeting in contempt of court during the Essex lorry deaths case.

If so, she’s an even worse judge of a situation than even This Writer thought.

Instead, she managed to expose herself with an enormous lie – and humiliate herself with an inept claim that Covid-19 is “bouncy”.

It might look like a space hopper in the illustrations, but that doesn’t mean it is one!

Let’s look at the enormous lie first:

Oh, really? Now let’s go over to our independent panel of commenters for their observations on that claim:

It was an enormous lie. Boris Johnson and his government have been months behind in their decision-making; they have ignored scientific advice, and they have tried to manipulate the crisis to suit their own selfish interests, rather than serving the public good.

I don’t think Patel can be blamed for making herself – and her government – look so bad, though. It’s symptomatic of her utter lack of self-consciousness; she thinks she can say anything at all, no matter how ridiculous, and the rest of us will swallow it.

Consider her other howler of the morning:

I’m looking forward to SAGE’s official documentation that endorses this description of Covid-19.

I may have a long wait ahead of me.

But there is a silver lining, as the following tweet makes plain:

Yes indeed. Sadly, it seems, you have to sell your integrity, your self-respect and indeed your soul to the Conservative Party. Some might say the price is too high.

Have YOU donated to my crowdfunding appeal, raising funds to fight false libel claims by TV celebrities who should know better? These court cases cost a lot of money so every penny will help ensure that wealth doesn’t beat justice.
