Social landlord Midland Heart has suspended its chairman, Lord Ian Austin, after he described “Islamist rapists and murderers” in a post on the social media.
The Birmingham-based social landlord said Lord Austin has been suspended from his duties, while a meeting has been arranged for 14 days time, “in line with rules of the association, to discuss his removal from the board”.
In an email sent to staff and seen by Inside Housing, Midland Heart chief executive Glenn Harris said that “given the impact this has had on the reputation of our organisation and the upset it has caused, especially to our colleagues, the board unanimously feel this is the only course of action”.
In the post on X (formerly Twitter), which has since been deleted, Lord Austin said: “Everyone, better safe than sorry: before you go to bed, nip down and check you haven’t inadvertently got a death cult of Islamist murderers and rapists running their operations downstairs. It’s easily done.”
Following complaints about his use of language, Lord Austin posted on X: “People have complained about a tweet I issued at the weekend about Hamas’ operations centre being underneath UNRWA’s offices.
“It was not my intention to offend anyone and I have deleted it. As I have written and said many times – including in a national newspaper today – the vast majority of Muslims are just as appalled by racism and terrorism as everyone else.”
Austin was a major supporter of Israel within the Labour Party before being ennobled, and was at the forefront of efforts to smear former party leader Jeremy Corbyn with accusations of anti-Semitism.

As usual I checked the BBC website to see their coverage and was again disappointed, but not surprised, to find a deafening silence on this. I searched all relevant section (and many irrelevant) before doing a general search on his name to discover the last story on him was in 2019.
In my search however, I note that on the same day, 16th Feb, they ran a story about a former political candidate making inappropriate remarks in regard to the Israel Gaza situation. I thought it was a reference to Lord Austin as he has been rather high profile eg previously a Housing Minister and very highly publicised as having left the Labour Party due to ‘antisemitism’ and recommending Labour voters to vote for Boris Johnson before being ennobled. You’d think it’d get even a PASSING mention but no.
The story they DID run was:
“Ms Onstad stood to become a Southend-on-Sea city councillor in May 2023, but was not elected in the Blenheim Park ward.
On 14 February she took to X to confirm her resignation from the Liberal Democrat Party. She wrote: “Certain people in the party have taken great offence at the vehemence and ferocity of my stance in the fight to end the genocide in Palestine and have conflated my anti-Zionist position with antisemitism, which is clearly absurd.””
So a failed councillor’s writings on X are of more import than a current Lord and former Housing Minister? Please note that the piece on Onstad was run on the SAME DAY and was in the Israel Gaza section – not buried in local news but VERY highly publicised.
Y’know, if I didn’t know better I’d say someone in the BBC had an agenda..
this is why no one gives a sh!t abour royalty and the honours system that rewards the worst people, this is nothing but a continuous gravy train!
