Are you one of the SEVEN MILLION of us struggling to pay the bills?
More than seven million adults in the United Kingdom are struggling to pay their bills because of Tory failures in government.
According to the Financial Conduct Authority,
In January 2024:
- 7.4 million people (14%) felt “heavily burdened” by their domestic bills and credit commitments
- 5.5 million people (11%) missed bill payments or borrowing repayments in the previous six months
- 14.6 million people (28%) were “not coping financially or finding it difficult to cope”
- 5.9 million adults (11%) had no disposable income
Are you among the 7.4 million struggling to pay their bills?
This Writer isn’t – yet.
But like half of all the adults in the UK (according to the FCA) , I’ve had to cut back or delay spending on food shopping and what you might call home improvements. Those investments will have to happen sooner or later, though.
And like a quarter of the UK’s adults, (26 per cent), I’m having to work more hours – not to earn extra money, as the FCA suggests – but simply to break even.
What can you do?
The BBC article I’m quoting does have advice:
- Talk to someone. You are not alone and there is help available. A trained debt adviser can talk you through the options.
- Take control. Citizens Advice suggest you work out how much you owe, who to, which debts are the most urgent and how much you need to pay each month.
- Ask for a payment plan. Energy suppliers, for example, must give you a chance to clear your debt before taking any action to recover the money
- Check you’re getting the right money. Use the independent MoneyHelper website or benefits calculators run by Policy in Practice and charities Entitledto and Turn2us
- Ask for breathing space. If you’re receiving debt advice in England and Wales you can apply for a break to shield you from further interest and charges for up to 60 days.
But what about those of us who don’t fall into the rigid categories required to receive this help?
I wouldn’t get it at the moment because my head is just above the water.
But I can feel the Tory jackboot pushing me down – and I can see the Labour jackboot waiting to take over.
