James Cleverly is distorting the truth again. Don’t believe this Tory’s ‘votes for criminals’ lie.
The BBC is reporting that a Labour government would try to “distort” the UK political system by phasing out the remaining hereditary peers from the House of Lords, giving young people aged 16 and 17 the right to vote, along with foreign nationals – and criminals.
Labour is indeed planning to phase out hereditary peers. That would leave the House of Lords inhabited by people who will not be able to pass their titles down to their descendants, meaning there will no longer be any automatic right for anyone to sit as a member of Parliament on that extremely dubious basis.
Life peers, as they are known, will still be appointed on the basis of recommendations from political party leaders – and this system has been proved to be entirely corrupt by the way the Tories have rigged it since 2010 – but Labour’s plan is still a step in the right direction, towards an elected upper house composed of experts in particular political fields.

An experiment in giving the vote to 16 and 17-year-olds in Wales and Scotland has been deemed successful – but these new voters are less likely to vote Conservative than older members of society who enjoy more advantages, and this may be why Cleverly opposes its rollout nationally.
Labour had suggested handing votes to EU citizens in the UK – but this did not make it into the party’s manifesto and is not considered to be policy.
But Labour has not suggested giving the vote to criminals and Cleverly is entirely wrong to have claimed that this might happen.
His narrative is that Labour will try to “lock in their power permanently”. But isn’t that what the Conservatives tried to do – by gerrymandering constituency boundaries in order to ensure the highest possible number of Tory voters for each Parliamentary seat?
Isn’t it what the Conservatives are trying to do by demanding that voters have very specific forms of identification with them when they attend polling stations on Thursday (July 4) – or be turned away without being allowed to exercise their democratic right?
Tories like Cleverly are far more guilty of trying to “lock in their power permanently” than Labour.
All this liar has done is provide us all with yet another reason to vote against his party.
