Labour's strategy on money is the same as the Tories in 2010

It took Labour just 16 hours to tell us the national finances are terrible, after This Writer asked how long we would have to wait.

I suggested that this revelation would be followed by a series of policy announcements that would involve either no government spending – or very little.

Here‘s Rachel Reeves, saying the new government has inherited the worst set of financial circumstances since World War II.

So she has announced that she is reforming planning rules to build 1.5 million new homes in England over the course of the current Parliament – as This Writer predicted yesterday.

Changes to planning included ending the effective ban on onshore wind farms in England, in order to speed up national infrastructure projects.

The aim is clear: to bring tens of billions of pounds of private investment into green industry and housebuilding rather than spending any public money.

The big disappointment is that this means the Labour Party will build no council homes. What a huge let-down.

How much public money is available and what will Reeves do with it?

We’ll have an indication of how much money is available before Parliament’s summer recess, when MPs will be presented with the results of an assessment of the public finances.

For what she’ll do with it, we’ll have to wait until after Parliament’s summer recess, when she announces the new government’s first budget.
