Tell Ofgem’s covert consultation to end standing charges

The energy regulator has been asking about changes to pricing structures – but so quietly that nobody seems to know about it, even though this is your chance to tell Ofgem’s covert consultation to end standing charges.

Perhaps you’re not aware of this, but the standing charges we all pay – simply for the privilege of being connected to the energy grid – are hugely unfair on low-income households.

Those who are most vulnerable, including people who use the least energy, end up paying a larger proportion of their income on energy costs.

This system forces those with the least financial resilience to shoulder the highest burden, creating an unjust and lethal situation where the poor subsidize the wealthy.

Despite a strong public call for change, Ofgem is proposing only minor adjustments to this deeply unfair pricing structure – and is quietly conducting yet another consultation while winter fuel payments dominate the news (meaning fewer people are likely to hear about it).

This Writer is intimately aware of the effect standing charges can have on poorer households. In my own current abode, they account for the vast majority of my daily spending on energy. That isn’t fair.

So I am happy to support the campaign by the Peace & Justice Project, Fuel Poverty Action and Green New Deal Rising to demand that standing charges must be scrapped altogether.

There’s an easy way to do it, too – here:

What are you waiting for?

By emailing Ofgem before Friday, 20th September you can let the regulator know that we will not accept these cruel and regressive charges, especially in light of the coming price hike that will make an already dire situation worse for millions from October 1.
