Labour may water down its plan for ending non-dom tax status

Quelle surprise! Labour may water down its plan for ending non-dom tax status.

The previous, Tory, government stopped the condition after it was revealed that Rishi Sunak’s non-dom wife Akshata Murty (pictured with him) was avoiding huge amounts of tax.

It seems this is because scrapping two concessions made by the previous government might not raise the £1 billion Labour thought it would, or indeed any money at all.

The money is earmarked in the Labour manifesto for extra hospital and dental appointments and school breakfast clubs.

But the concessions were made to reduce the incentive for wealthy foreigners with a permanent home abroad to emigrate, which would mean any money raised by the loss of non-dom status would be lost again because those who would be paying it would no longer live in the UK.

So now Rachel Reeves and her Treasury team may have to water down their plans – and possibly even forget them altogether.

That will add another £1 billion to the financial “black hole” Reeves keeps banging on about. How will she cope with that?
