The Labour government has chartered a flight out of Lebanon for UK nationals – but why not simply send in the military to evacuate them?
Oh, I know – because this way, they’ll have to pay money.
Every seat on the plane that is due to leave Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport on Wednesday will cost £350.
What if people don’t have the cash? Are they supposed to just stay where they are and be bombed?

Israel started another attack on southern Lebanon just hours after the UK government announced it had chartered a commercial flight out of the beleaguered Middle East country, with air strikes hitting a southern suburb of Beirut [pictured].
Sadly, it seems many UK nationals will have to stay and face the threat of being bombed in any case, because the flight will only be able to take a few hundred people and there are between 4,000 and 6,000 UK citizens and their dependants in Lebanon.
With so few seats available and so many people eligible to take one, it seems to This Writer that this is not so much a rescue operation as it is an attempt to extract cash from people who are in danger.
We know that UK military forces are massing in Cyprus, in preparation for a rescue mission. Why not just let them get on with it?
