Keir Starmer has repaid a tiny fraction of the freebies he has received – are we supposed to be impressed?

According to the BBC, he has covered the cost of more than £6,000 worth of gifts and hospitality including six Taylor Swift tickets, four tickets to the races and a clothing rental agreement with a high-end designer favoured by his wife, Lady Starmer.

What about the rest of it?

We know he received £66,000 in gifts in the last year alone, so he has only returned one-eleventh of that. And who knows how much he has had since becoming Labour leader in 2020?

Can you imagine what would happen if, say, someone accused of misclaiming Universal Credit, or Personal Independence Payment, or Employment and Support Allowance, said they would pay back one-eleventh of what they were said to owe – and that from just a single year’s claim?

He says he is reforming the principles on receipt of donations by MPs, and decided that “until those principles were in place it was right to repay those particular payments” – but does that mean he’ll be handing back more?

Or will the new principles just offer him a chance to cover his tracks?
