Chagos handover was against the islanders’ wishes

Much has been made of the UK’s decision to hand the Chagos islands back to Mauritius, but isn’t the worst of it the allegation that the Chagos handover was against the islanders’ wishes?

Here’s Beastrabban to explain:

Here’s another video from Jharek Carnelian explaining the background to yet another controversy that has engulfed the Labour party. This is the handing back of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, which the right has seized upon as a massive betrayal of British sovereignty.

The Argentinians have seized on it to make noises over the Falklands, and the right-wing media have also declared that it will delight China.

If you watch their stuff, Starmer is the greatest traitor to this country since Lord Haw-Haw and Burgess and MacLean.

But Mr Carnelian says right at the beginning of the video that the voices of the Chagos Islanders themselves aren’t being heard.

The islands had belonged to Mauritius up until 1968, when [they were] taken over by Britain as part of a deal granting Mauritius independence.

The islanders were forcibly relocated to Britain, Mauritius and the Seychelles and their animals slaughtered in preparation for the construction of air force bases.

The Islanders fear that their identity is under threat and naturally wish to return. They have been demanding this and protesting for many years.

In the clip, al-Jazeera’s man talks to the islanders themselves, getting their opinions. They complain that the deal has been done over their heads and their wishes have been ignored once again.
