New North Sea oil and gas field approvals have been quashed as ‘illegal’

New North Sea oil and gas field approvals have been quashed as ‘illegal’ after appeals by environmental campaigners.

The highest court in Scotland – the Court of Session – has ruled that approval for the Rosebank and Jackdaw oil sites in the North Sea – given by the UK’s former Conservative government – was unlawful, in a momentous victory for climate campaigners in the country and around the world.

The approval was made by the Conservative government in 2023.  This new ruling places pressure on the new Labour government to halt drilling at these sites and invest in sustainable energy, our communities and a Green New Deal.

Opening new drilling fields is incompatible with the UK’s commitments to tackle the climate crisis and its obligations to global accords on ensuring the long-term future of the Earth as a home for humanity, climate campaigners and their sympathisers agree.

The victory has been hailed by the Peace and Justice Project that was founded by now-Independent MP Jeremy Corbyn.

“We hope that this landmark victory for the campaign for climate action will clear the way for future wins in the courts that will force the government to finally put people and planet before profit,” said a spokesperson.

“Peace and Justice Project will continue to support climate justice campaigns and hold the government to account for its disastrous failure to take action to secure our long-term and sustainable future on Earth.”
