I know. Those aren’t UK pounds burning; it’s a representative image. Your Conservative Government might as well be burning your money.

The Conservatives have failed in their primary mission as a UK government.

They promised to eliminate the national deficit and start to cut the national debt. They have not done so.

The deficit is down, but the debt has nearly tripled.

Living standards have plummeted, prices have soared, wages have stagnated.

Conditions in this country are far worse than they were in 2010…

For everybody except the obscenely wealthy.

They have done very well for themselves under the Tories.

Where public service and funding cuts should have contributed to closing the deficit and reducing the debt, they have instead been used to cut higher-rate and business taxes.

Where the rest of us have toiled to pay our taxes, the very rich have benefited from tax avoidance schemes that have become scandals involving ministers in the highest ranks of the Conservative government.

In short, we have the worst government – certainly in This Writer’s lifetime.

And who pays for Tory selfishness?

You do.

The government is on course to impose steep cuts in public spending from April and increase taxes by the end of the decade to their highest level as a share of national income since 1986-87 to combat the UK’s persistent budget deficit.

But slower economic growth following the Brexit vote will still leave the UK with one of the largest black holes in public spending in the developed world, meaning the next government must find £34bn to eliminate the budget deficit in the next parliament, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
