Labour’s new ‘free school meals’ policy is a huge boost – for the party, and for pupils

Even Tory-sponsored YouGov can’t deny that Labour’s new plan to provide free school meals to all primary school pupils is a vote-winner after 52 per cent of people polled by the company supported it.

Here are YouGov’s findings in a handy little tweet; you can click on the link to see the full results:

Even alleged Twitter hermit Jeremy Corbyn spent all day yesterday (April 6) publicising the new policy (I really don’t think he’s as quiet as his critics keep trying to suggest, you know):

Any questions?

A Labour government would extend universal free school meals to all primary school pupils, and charge parents VAT on private school fees to pay for it.

Labour says the extension of free school meals to juniors would cost between £700 and £900 million a year and will improve pupil attainment and health.

Universal infant free school meals, introduced by the coalition government in 2014, already costs the taxpayer more than £600 million a year, but Labour claims it can raise £1.5 billion by charging VAT on tuition fees charged by independent schools.

Unless the next Conservative majoritarian government, elected in 2020, decide to do it this laudable policy will never get implemented, Mike.

Because you and your ilk are working so hard to undermine the Labour Party?

Does this mean that Labour have given up on the idea that everyone should have a right to be able to survive, maybe ensuring that people had enough to provide their children with meals would be a better approach.

That’s a twisted approach to this subject. Until proper wages and economic growth are returned to the UK, surely Labour should do all it can to mitigate Tory persecution of the poor?

At least primary school children should automatically have free meals at school!!

Jeremy looks like natural with the children and they look like they like him. I really hope Corbyn wins and gets a like-minded government behind him!!
