The newly-launched Lib Dem manifesto focuses on health and care but Jeremy Corbyn has the edge when it comes to policy.
We’ll come to him below.
Let’s start with Ed Davey, who insisted his party would put £8 billion into health and care services if elected to government during the Liberal Democrat manifesto launch event today (June 10, 2024).

Plans announced as part of the launch include an extra £3.7 billion a year for social care with three main pledges:

Ensuring care workers are paid at least £2 above the minimum wage to help tackle vacancies
-
A £20 per week increase to Carer’s Allowance, which supports people looking after someone with an illness or disability for at least 35 hours a week

Raising how much carers can earn in addition to caring duties to a minimum £183 a week and still receive the allowance, expected to cost an extra £1.4bn a year
This Writer was delighted to see the plans for Carers Allowance and carers’ earnings; when Mr Davey made claims about paid carers, I asked what he was offering the rest of us – and now we all know.
Other policies unveiled today are revealed here. I would have been more enthusiastic about them if they had not been unveiled to the sound of Abba’s Take A Chance On Me.
The Green Party has announced its plans for health and care, and they are discussed by This Site here.
Labour and the Conservatives both want to increase NHS privatisation and have no coherent plans for care, so they aren’t even worth discussing.
And Jeremy Corbyn?
He is inviting everybody – particularly constituents of Islington North – to a rally in defence of the NHS.
“In Islington North, we believe in free, public, universal healthcare,” he said.
“Together, we have defended our precious local services from austerity, privatisation and closure. In 2010, we marched down Holloway Road to protest the closure of the Whittington Hospital A&E department – and we won. Last year, we fought back after a US healthcare insurance giant took over Hanley Care Centre – and we won.
“Now, in Islington North, we are fighting for the very future of our NHS – we must win.”
He said: “Unlike Labour and the Tories, I do not believe that privatisation is the answer to the crisis in our NHS. It is the cause, not the solution [for] rising waiting lists, stagnant pay and a crumbling social care system.
“So join me on Saturday at 11am at Navigator Square for an emergency rally to defend our NHS.
“We will hear from some fantastic speakers before I head over to the Whittington Hospital to hand in the following pledge:
“As your independent candidate for Islington North, I will never take donations from private healthcare. I will stand shoulder to shoulder with NHS staff on strike for fair pay. And I will always defend a fully public, fully funded NHS.”
“After the rally, we will go canvassing straight away in the local area, before reconvening for a 12pm canvassing session at Cafe Metro – we need … help to knock on every door in Islington North, so please join us!”
He concluded with this message to anybody looking to promote private healthcare: “Keep your hands off our NHS.”
