Tory rag revives ‘benefit scrounger’ lie to smooth over DWP’s bad publicity
The state of this:
This Writer suspects that the editors of The Sun have run this story because the Department for Work and Pensions has been shown up for denying benefits to people who deserve them, in order to meet a quota.
The policy has caused a huge amount of suffering – both due to deprivation and damage to mental health. So The Sun runs a piece attempting to remind the easily-led that benefit claimants are an underclass in Tory Britain, worthy only to be ‘nudged’ off-benefit and toward death.
“And,” as @TyronWilson puts it, “when you actually read the story it says that she saves her benefits all year and doesn’t spend money on herself so she can do this for her kids.”
And there is always the backstop reason for stories like this:
What is purpose of this front page if not to encourage people to hate people on benefits?
That way they are less likely to be angry about rich & the taxcheating of people like Rupert Murdoch who owns the Sun
How do editor & journalists justify such vile journalism to themselves? https://t.co/xIaBdrGwah— Tom London (@TomLondon6) December 15, 2017
It’s miserable and mean-spirited – as is anybody who believes and/or supports it.

well it is the sun and lets face it who buys the sun for anything readable, the only good thing about the scum is Hagar the Horrible, if they still do it, however as a paper I suppose true reporting is real hard, perhaps they could do a story about bad assessors and fitness to work or am I being simply silly for suggesting something that is owned by something as horrible as Murdoch, and let’s be perfectly honest here, Hillsborough, coal miner’s, sort of say’s it all really, so what should Murdoch do, well he could give the paper away, someone might even read it then or even better when it printed load it up in to vans and take it down for recycling as that sum’s up my view of what that paper is trash
Typical Tory rag headline designed solely to get people to hate anyone on benefits. A cynical attempt to cover up the bad publicity for the DWP over flawed rollout of Universal Credit which will mean many claimants will be potloss over Christmas and New Year. A mum who has saved all year long going without any luxuries so her kids can enjoy Christmas deserves a Mum of the award not made into a “Scronger’ by the Murdoch’s press.
I have to say I have a lot of respect for her for making sure her children have a good christmas
We have got to take our lives out of these people’s hands. I have said that for many years as one govt after another do not do their duty but blame, abuse and take money from disabled, vulnerable and just good normal every day people. We give them the money, they misuse it and deny our rights and support. Breach of Covenant between govt and people
