Uncaring Universal Credit: Autistic woman ‘left sick and broken’ by two-year ‘benefit’ delay
An autistic woman says she has been left without vital financial support – and life-saving medication – for nearly two years because she cannot cope with the face-to-face interview she must undergo to complete her universal credit claim.
Claire*, who lives in the Manchester area, does not have enough money to pay for the medicine she needs because the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is refusing to complete her claim, 22 months after she applied for universal credit.
Because of her complex health conditions, including the severe anxiety she experiences following a serious physical assault, she cannot cope with a face-to-face assessment.

This is yet another story of the evil deeds of the DWP. The more they get away with the nastier they behave but the public are becoming decensitised to the stories and show no outrage. Murderous behaviour like this justifies not only a march to parliament but a march into parliament to physically remove these despots. It doesn’t mean there should be violence and it should be assisted by the police and army. They are breaking the law and ignoring anyone who points this out therefore it should be enforced. It is a government’s job to protect its citizens not murder them. No money has been saved by these acts, it has cost more to deny people the welfare protection they deserve (and often paid for) than if the few fraudulent claimants that exist were paid and left to live with the fear of being caught. The Assessors and decision makers who lie are committing much worse crimes than any benefit cheat and we pay them a bonus for it. When will people wake up and realise that all of us are victims of this corrupt Organization that has gone rogue and is out of control. Ideally all existing and pending claims should be allowed while the DWP is brought to a halt and investigated under the terrorist laws because that is what they have become. They are supposed to be public servants but have taken it upon themselves to serve up fear and poverty. Now they are going to be targeting our children. This must end now
I once tried to get the police to investigate the deaths caused by the Conservative government through the DWP – and I’m not the only one to do so. They refused to act, which tends to reinforce the belief that the police don’t exist to uphold the law, but to support the Establishment in anything it does.
Couldn’t she take the assessment company and DWP to court for not making reasonable adjustments? Has she sent in letters from her GP or a specialist, or even both, saying due to the serious assault they are unlikely to get any answers from her on the questions they ask due to her condition. Just because they suffer serious anxiety doesn’t mean they are not ill.
Also could this person arrange for someone to attend with her at every appointment with someone they fully trust and knows about their condition, possibly answering questions on their condition for them?
This is an appalling way to be treated by the people who should be trying to make life easier, not harder. However there’s something hinky here. She has diabetes according to the article. Shouldnt someone have told her she should be getting free prescriptions? Like the GP who diagnosed it perhaps?
