Child homelessness has increased by 87 PER CENT because of the Conservatives

Homeless children: Glenn and his children are living in an emergency hostel after becoming homeless.

Some stories are Christmas classics – they get wheeled out every year and retold, often in a new form, to remind us all of what’s really important at this time of year. I wish this particular story was not one of them.

But it seems that a version of this particular story has appeared every bloody year since I started Vox Political in 2011 – because every bloody year there has been an increase in the number of children who are homeless, because of the bloody Conservative government.

Here‘s the story I published last year – and here‘s my piece chronicling Theresa May’s response to the rise in child homelessness then.

This is from 2016.

Now this:

According to Shelter:

  • 131,000 homeless children will be living in temporary accommodation over the festive period in Britain, the equivalent of five youngsters in every school.
  • Overall, 50,000 more children in England, Wales and Scotland are homeless compared with five years ago, a rise of 59 per cent.
  • Since 2010, the number of homeless people in temporary accommodation has grown by 61 per cent, driven by high rents, welfare cuts and a shortage of affordable housing.
  • Council spending on this form of housing has increased by 39 per cent over the same period, at a cost to the taxpayer of £845 million in 2016.

Is it worth mentioning, here, that it is cheaper to keep people in housing than it is to spend money handling the consequences of homelessness? See my articles here and here.

But Theresa May and her Tories keep pushing children out of their homes and into temporary accommodation.

Last year, she had this to say about it:

This year, when Jeremy Corbyn mentioned the cuts in income that have led to the extreme poverty that causes homelessness, she laughed:

Tories think homelessness – even, possibly especially child homelessness – is a big joke.
