It’s the season for Christmas carols – how about a couple from the Universal Credit songbook?

This is brilliant – and it puts the situation for people across the country in the boldest possible terms.

Some bright spark has used the plight of people awaiting their benefit payments as the inspiration for the Universal Credit songbook – an online source of new lyrics for Christmas carols, appropriate to the times in which we live, and to UC in particular. Here’s an example:

Possibly inspired by the above, someone else has composed a few words in memory of the homeless man who died a few metres from the entrance to Parliament earlier this month:

Feel free to download and read the songbook.

You might even like to record some of the songs and put them on the internet, in case the Conservatives are still in office next Christmas.

Glad you enjoyed the Carol Book. Colin Hampton, Simon Bell and myself wrote them over a couple of days of frenzied creativity ( lots of try outs over the phone) last year for our Unite Community National Days of Action against Universal Crédit in Chesterfield and High Peak. Colin got it published and it spread by word and mouth. We understand they inspired the formation of a socialist choir in the South West. Seems to have taken off this year :-) We have developed some of the songs in the intervening period.
