Universal Credit: Mentally ill man asked how often he changes his underwear

Tory Britain. And they’re trying to claim Boris Johnson is the “People’s Prime Minister”? Pull the other one.

A 35-year-old benefit claimant claims he was asked how often he changes his underwear during a humiliating face-to-face ‘fit for work’ assessment.

The unnamed individual is said to suffer from mental health problems which affect his ability to hold down a job.

He was told to attend a ‘Work Capability Assessment’ as part of a new claim for Universal Credit, despite being told by a doctor that he was unfit for work because of his poor mental state.

What do they expect people to say to questions like that? “I change my undies once a fortnight, but I do turn them inside out after the first week.” And why is that even relevant? All deliberately designed to belittle people. Classic Psychological warfare / Psyops techniques.

They asked me the same damn thing at mine last week, I felt so humiliated I just cried and cried, the questions were so very invasive

They should be ashamed of themselves. My 16 yrs old son who was born with a rare disability & has attended gt ormond St hospital all his life. He lost his benefit in again another humiliating face to face meetings. My son now is struggling to get the aids needed as we have to pay for them on our own now. The distress this put him through is so wrong.

Disgraceful. My mum had her assessment a few weeks ago. Some of the questions made her burst into tears. She suffers from physical pain every day of due to an illness she will have for the rest of her life and is wheelchair bound. She’s clearly disabled and now suffers depression too. She suffers even more in the weeks leading up to her assessments and on the day, it’s awful for her. They wouldn’t even come out for a home visit because although we sent a copy of a doctors note saying she needed one, they claimed not to have it and said it’s too late now to send it again. So we had to take a taxi costing £20 each way. She was exhausted by the end of the day and waiting for the decision and worrying she may lose her benefits over the next 6 weeks really takes it’s toll on her. And some people have even worse experiences. They’re vile and inhumane.

It’s sad, but the only correct response to a question like that is to launch yourself across the table at the interviewer and start slapping them very hard.

This will ‘prove’ mental health issues are a factor and it will make them think carefully about the next question they ask.

Exactly! This type of action is what’s needed. As no one sees or relates to mental illness. Which leads to added pressures of sufferers. Nice one!

I had a assessment and they said I was fit to work my Dr diagnose me with depression and anxiety and vertigo and the assessment never asked me one question about what I was I’ll with she told the dwp a lot of lies and she was a physiotherapist and now they just sent me again and I asked for a full qualified doctor and when I got there I asked him was he a full qualified doctor he said he was a register physiotherapist and that who you see and I’m refused to see him

That’s ridiculous, how the hell can a physiotherapist diagnose mental health? No wonder they are passing everyone fit for work. The Tories attitude seems to be to deny the existence of mental illness and just decided for themselves that work is the best cure for everything. Arbeit Macht Frei all over again.

It’s absolutely disgusting the questions a person gets asked these people are only physiotherapists or are they really we only have the word of the company they work for as far as we know they might have only done a fast track first aid course and even then they should not be allowed to do this type of work I’ve been fighting the DWP for 4 years after they awarded me zero points when my MRI proves otherwise and my doctor says iam not fit for work and the specialist at the RVI hospital. I was asked questions myself at the assessment and the main question I was asked have I considered suicide I said yes and her answer back was why was I still alive and sitting here for assessment when I should be dead they say everyone can have a recording of the interview but the person has to supply the recording equipment themselves what is not cheap as it’s to be recorded on a CD the company’s who the DWP use for these assessments should supply the recording equipment and the reason they don’t is to save money and if anyone on benefits did supply the own equipment first they would say how can you afford that on benefits and if u can set it up your automatically fit for work. And the last thing what they could say to stop you even using the equipment is it needs to be checked by a qualified electrician before allowing it to be used on the premises incase of a fire risk when it could be brand new so untill it’s checked and passed the person can’t use it so you have a choice go ahead without the recording equipment and fail or make another appointment only to find out that the assessment worker put you as you never attended so you fail the only other way would be to record it yourself on your mobile but even it can’t be used as evidence for a appeal because it’s been unlawfully recorded so either way the assessment person and the DWP win nobody can even trust the citizens advice bureau now because of the bribe they took from the DWP I should know because the citizens advice bureau destroyed my evidence.

If you record someone, tell them u are recording. Police have told me since u tell them it’s recording, recording someone will be legal. Surely same rule applies with dwp

It’s certain people who fiddle the system make it harder for the genuine people to get what they are entitled. Shame on them for treating people like they are lying who would willing. WANT TO BE INSULTED AT THESE ASSESSMENTS.

    • Mike Sivier September 8, 2019 at 7:52 pm - Reply

Only one per cent of benefit claimants commit fraud.

The people who really make it harder for genuine claimants to get the benefits to which they are entitled sit on the government benches in the House of Commons.

This is standard, as far as I am concerned. My mother was asked if she had a bath every day… because of her religion!
