Coronavirus: more courageous health workers die fighting the virus

I promised to keep a running record of coronavirus-related deaths.

Today (April 8), the UK government recorded its highest daily death total yet – 938 fatalities. If the Office for National Statistics is right, that means the actual total is more like 1,670.

Among the recent deaths are:

Anton Sebastianpillai

Alice Kit Tak Ong

Dr Paul Matawele

And midwife Lynsay Coventry.

No doubt there will be more tomorrow.

Please keep sending details to me.

You only count as dying from covid19 if you’ve been tested. I know of a large nursing home where a number of residents have died. As I understand it none of these people were tested so aren’t included in the statistics. The government have no incentive to improve testing because this will reveal how much they’ve been hiding so far and the real toll their neglect of the NHS is causing.

I think this is a great, if very sad, idea to honour those who have died while working for the JHS. But many of us feel it is wrong to talk about the pandemic using the language of war, of “courage” and “fighting the virus”. This is very much the language being used about Johnson, that he’s a “fighter” and will survive because he fights better than those who die. Sadly the truth is that these workers and others were overwhelmed by the virus.
