Independents and small parties need to step up their media game

Independents and small parties need to step up their media game if they are serious about winning in their constituencies.

This Site has been trying to support Independent/smaller party candidates, but I am only one person and there are 650 constituency elections being held; it has to be up to the candidates who want coverage to get in touch with me.

Here’s one organisation that has – just this morning:

I responded, saying I’ll be happy to do so, and requesting as much information as they can possibly give me. There will be an article later today – followed, I hope, by many others.

Tottenham and Haringey Palestine Action found me through my coverage of Andrew Feinstein’s campaign to unseat Keir Starmer in Holborn & St Pancras. His team regularly emails information to me, which I am then able to pass on to you.

But the gold standard of Independent campaign technique must be Jeremy Corbyn’s. Not only does his team send me information on a regular basis, but they find ways to ‘hook’ people into what they’re doing.

So I’ve published stories about him inviting canvassers to watch England’s first match of the Euro football tournament after a session, about him getting people to visit the government’s ‘Register to vote’ website (before the deadline) by pretending they would see him doing a video performance with a grunge star, and about him challenging his team to knock on every residential door in Islington North in a single weekend. I’ll be publishing an article about his success there later, too.

I dare say some Independents may feel overwhelmed by having to do media work as well as campaigning. They might argue that the major parties have big press offices, and even Messrs Corbyn and Feinstein have media teams, while they don’t.

But it is through the media that they win. Even Jeremy Corbyn would not have had 1,000 people knocking on doors over the last weekend if they had not all learned about it via media like Vox Political.

It doesn’t have to be much. You could mention events you’re attending, or conversations you’ve had with voters that have raised important political points that you want to highlight, or you could challenge your rivals over those – or any other – points. And Mr Corbyn’s team always adds a list of canvassing times and locations, along with the names of any special guests who are coming along, so you should do the same.

That’s another thought: special guests. If you have supporters who are famous, make sure you get that in front of the public too. Faiza Shaheen in Chingford & Woodford Green has the support of snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan [see the featured image].

Vox Political has an email address to which you can send material: [email protected]. Other social media sites also have ways by which they may be contacted.

If you’re an Independent or smaller-party election candidate, I urge you to take advantage of the opportunities we offer.
