What the UK needs is MPs free to speak their mind

Starmer’s election challenger has launched a ‘people’s manifesto’ for Camden

Keir Starmer’s election challenger has launched a ‘People’s Manifesto for Camden’.

Andrew Feinstein, the Independent anti-austerity, anti-war candidate standing against Starmer in Holborn and St Pancras, has drawn up the document alongside numerous representatives of the constituency’s communities.

He has stated that the Manifesto puts forward a very different kind of politics to that of the Labour leader’s elite, billionaire-funded and supported politics.

It addresses how the terrible housing crisis in the borough can be addressed through rent controls, how the collapse of the NHS due to lack of investment and privatisation can be reversed, the many other local issues that Camden residents face, and why the ongoing genocide in Gaza must be opposed, he said.

The People’s Manifesto launch has come after a Survation poll for 38 Degrees showed that more than half of people in Holborn and St Pancras have struggled to get a GP appointment in the last year, and more than a third have been waiting six months or longer for NHS treatment.

Nearly half have cut down on basic food purchases and heating amid the cost of living crisis, while more than one-in-ten now use a food bank.

Starkly, 72 per cent of voters in the constituency said their quality of life is getting worse.

Mr Feinstein said: “I am running for parliament on the issues people face every day, on the issues no party machine can fix. Keir Starmer’s Labour promises ‘Change’, but in almost a decade with him as our MP we’ve seen our rents rise and conditions worsen. What we haven’t seen is our actual MP, here in the constituency, fighting for local people on all these issues.

“The people of Camden deserve better than a choice between austerity in a red or blue tie. We can make history by taking power back into the hands of local people.

“This manifesto is a product of the people of Camden, their concerns, their needs and their visions. I hope for this to be a living document, which will grow and change with the needs of our community.”
