Nandita Lal explains the reasons for her election campaign in Tottenham

Voters need to think carefully about where to put their “X”: here, Nandita Lal explains the reasons for her election campaign in Tottenham.

Ms Lal is standing against incumbent David Lammy, amongst others – primarily because of the Labour Party’s terrible policy regarding Israel’s assault on Gaza.

“Tottenham and Haringey Palestine Action was founded last year in response to the assault on Gaza,” she told Vox Political.

“We’re a diverse group of local residents united in our call for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the occupation.

“Despite public support for these measures, the major political parties have ignored our demands.

“We’re pushing for concrete actions: an arms embargo, sanctions, and cutting diplomatic ties with Israel until Palestinians are free.”

Voters who agree with these plans should seriously consider supporting Ms Lal. As an Independent, she may be just one voice – but there are many other candidates calling for the same policies to be put into effect; if enough are elected, then whoever forms a government will have to pay attention.

But she isn’t just a single-issue candidate. The mother-of-two, who has been living in Tottenham for 10 years, said: “Our platform comes directly from the voices of Tottenham residents. We held a public assembly on May 8th with over 100 local people, where we discussed and shaped our goals.

“We’re fighting for social housing, better living standards, renationalizing public services, and more support for young people.

“We also demand climate action, migrant rights, and an end to public investments in the arms industry.”

This is a chance for the people of Tottenham to make their voices heard – not just as supporters of whatever suits the Labour Party, but calling for what the constituency actually needs.

Ms Lal summed it up in a single sentence: “We need to show David Lammy that Tottenham is not a Labour safe seat!”
