It seems Keir Starmer has been warned: he’ll have to axe the two-child benefit limit – whether he wants to or not.

The former Labour Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell told The Mirror it was “inevitable” the Government will have to “concede” on the issue. He also warned he would table an amendment to the King’s Speech next week if the new Labour administration failed to shift its stance.

The two-child benefit limit – introduced by austerity Chancellor George Osborne in 2017 – caused huge internal divisions in Labour last year. During the General Election campaign Mr Starmer defended the “difficult choice” to keep the policy in place and stressed that he would not make “unfunded promises”.

The party’s manifesto promised an “ambitious strategy to reduce child poverty” but made no mention of the controversial policy – one of the most severe cuts to welfare under the Tories.
