Has Keir Starmer u-turned over support for Israel?

The UK government no longer intends to contest the International Criminal Court’s right to seek an arrest warrant for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Has Keir Starmer u-turned over support for Israel?

He has already restored funding for UNRWA, the United Nations’ agency that helps Palestinian refugees – despite Israeli claims that it is a hive of support for terrorist organisations including Hamas, the group that launched an attack on Israel on October 7 last year, triggering that nation’s war of genocide against Gaza.

Now this:

In May, the chief prosecutor of the ICC said there were reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Netanyahu bore criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The previous Conservative UK government had indicated it planned to make a submission to the court – having questioned the right of the prosecutor to apply for a warrant – but had not done so before the election.

Now, a spokesperson for the new Labour government has said it will not be making a submission, saying it is “a matter for the court”.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: “I think you would note that the courts have already received a number of submissions on either side, so they are well seized of the arguments to make their independent determinations.”

The ICC’s chief prosecutor is also seeking arrest warrants for Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Deif, and Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

If the ICC proceeds with the arrest warrants, it is possible that Netanyahu and Gallant would be asked not to visit British land, to avoid being arrested by the UK authorities.

That’s a big change in attitude for Starmer, who has previously been considered Israel’s puppy – if not its actual puppet.

Has the worm turned? Now the power of the UK government is supporting him, does he suddenly think he’s a dragon?
