Remember what This Site was saying, just two days ago, about racist politicians? This is exactly what we’re talking about.

Tory leadership candidate Robert Jenrick has appeared on television, calling for Muslims to be arrested for speaking a phrase that is central to their faith. He even got it wrong, in classic racist-white-trash fashion:

Another day, another senior Tory being Islamophobic. Allahu Akbar means God is great – the Muslim equivalent of Hallelujah.

The phrase “Allahu akbar”, formally known as the Takbir, is a common Arabic expression, used in Islamic rituals and other social occasions. It is also used by Orthodox Arab Christians as an expression of faith.

Yes, it is also used as a battle cry by Muslim extremists and terrorists, but this has been denounced by other Muslims. It seems that the mass media and pundits have been most responsible for associating the phrase with terrorism – people like Jenrick.

Perhaps if we all spent a little less time listening to racists like him, and a little more time thinking for ourselves, the world might become a better place.
