Shamima Begum’s citizenship refusal could not have come at a worse time
Shamima Begum’s citizenship refusal could not have come at a worse time, with race riots (let’s call them what they are) breaking out across the UK and anti-Muslim sentiment at a racism-stoked high.
For the record, This Writer’s opinion is that the courts are right to deny Begum’s request to have her UK citizenship reinstated. She knew what she was doing when she left the UK to join Islamic State, IS, ISIS or whatever you want to call it now – and I saw no remorse when she was later asked about her involvement in it.
So I’m fine with all this:
Justices at the UK’s highest court said Begum could not appeal again.
In their decision, Lords Reed, Hodge and Lloyd-Jones found her proposed appeal grounds “do not raise an arguable point of law”.
The three justices said there was no arguable challenge to the Court of Appeal’s decision, including on whether Begum should have been able to make representations to the then home secretary before she was stripped of her citizenship.
Dismissing her Court of Appeal challenge in February, the Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr, said: “It could be argued the decision in Ms Begum’s case was harsh.
“It could also be argued that Ms Begum is the author of her own misfortune, but it is not for this court to agree or disagree with either point of view.
“The only task of the court was to assess whether the deprivation decision was unlawful.
“Since it was not, Ms Begum’s appeal is dismissed.”
It’s just unfortunate that this decision happened in the week of racist anti-Muslim rioting across the UK.
I fear it will fuel anti-Muslim sentiment and worsen the violence. I hope I am mistaken.

Au contrere, Mike.
It shows that people who go abroad to take up racial or religious wars aren’t welcome and will be kept out.
What can the fascists have to gripe about here?
You agree with me on every point you make! Why do you start with “Au contrere”?
The point is that they may be ENCOURAGED by this, and do worse!
As William Joyce discovered as he was hanged for Treason, it is actually quite difficult to lose our British status. He was a Subject because as a United States Born Citizen in New York of Irish parents he had used later a British Subject Irish issued Passport. Shemima was by birth a Bangladeshi National and so could be deprived of her British Citizen Passport. Muslim terrorists are part of Islam, and are a part that has to be eliminated, as in Gaza. There is really no other option! I have had Muslim friends since 1952 and have a Muslim adopted son in Golconda, whom I help from time to time. I have no illusions about Muslim terrorists, they have to be stopped!
