Unite might be right to fight winter fuel payment cuts in court

The new Labour government withdraw it from all pensioners, making it only available to those on Pension Credit, in an attempt to fill the financial “black hole” ministers say the former Tory government left them with.

But then we learned that Ofgem was raising the energy price cap, meaning we’ll all be nearly £150 worse-off, on average, this winter.

Here’s 38 Degrees:

BREAKING: Average energy bills are going up by £150 per household. That’s because Ofgem just announced that the energy price cap is increasing by 10% from October – just in time for winter. [1]

Worse still, this comes just weeks after the Government scrapped the Winter Fuel Allowance for millions of pensioners, which could leave up to two million older people struggling to pay their bills. [2]

More than 255,000 of us have already joined the fight to stop the Government from scrapping the Winter Fuel Allowance. With today’s brutal energy bills news, we need to show Chancellor Rachel Reeves & Scottish Finance Minister Shona Robinson that we – the public – are against these plans and that they need to protect struggling pensioners this winter.

So … will you join 254,000 of us and sign the petition calling on Chancellor Rachel Reeves & Scottish Finance Minister Shona Robinson not to scrap the Winter Fuel Allowance for millions? Use the button below to sign with one click!

Here is what the petition says:

Rachel Reeves said the Winter Fuel Allowance will be limited to the poorest households. But experts have warned that the changes could force millions of people to face the dilemma of choosing between heating their homes or putting food on the table. [3]

Reeves, who blamed the previous Government’s economic management, has already faced a backlash in the media and a growing outcry from the public. If all of us come together NOW, we can make it clear that this was the wrong choice – and force her to back down.

We’ve been here before, Mike. Last year, 90,000 of us came together when rumours emerged that the Government was considering a similar cut (which Rachel Reeves opposed at the time!) – and the plans were scrapped! [4] Now we need to join forces again to help protect elderly and vulnerable people in our society.
