Citizens Advice has joined calls for pensioners to get financial aid, after Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves took winter fuel payments away from those not on Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits.
This Site has previously shared a petition by campaign organisation 38 Degrees, calling for the payments to be reinstated as a universal benefit for all pensioners.
Now, ahead of a meeting with energy firms to discuss the issue, the BBC is reporting that Citizens Advice boss Dame Clare Moriarty has called for a “social tariff” – discounted bills for those least able to afford them.
And she said energy suppliers “need to step up to their responsibilities on energy efficiency and on payment plans for those who are struggling”.

Both prime minister Keir Starmer and Reeves have defended their decision to cut winter fuel payments, saying it was a decision they had been forced to take because of a £22bn “black hole” in public finances left by the former Conservative government.
But this is not true.
They could have increased taxes on the richest in society and raised many billions of pounds, but they chose to further impoverish the already-poor instead.
