Study says focusing on children’s health is the way to a better NHS

A government study says focusing on children’s health is the way to a better NHS – or so we are being told.

Labour Health Secretary Wes Streeting demanded a review of NHS performance shortly after the general election on July 4 – to help identify the biggest barriers to improving waiting times.

It is expected to show that more than 100,000 infants were left waiting for over six hours in A&E in England last year, while 800,000 children and young people are on NHS waiting lists for hospital treatments.

According to the BBC,

Dr Mike McKean, Vice President of Policy at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, told BBC Breakfast that while the review will highlight some issues that apply to adults as well children, “we have simply got our prioritisation wrong here”.

“When you think about diseases that adults get – whether it’s cancers, dementia or cardiovascular diseases – many of them are because of a lifetime of problems and a lot of them start in childhood.

“If you get it right for children and families… then we know we will have more robust adults who will get less illnesses and diseases,” he added.

What did they all expect, after 14 years in which the Tories – deliberately? – attacked children’s health?

Due to Tory political policies, 4.2 million children are living in poverty – 2.4 million of them in severe poverty. This means families are struggling to afford and find healthy and nutritious food, which has a knock-on effect on children’s mental and physical health.

Children who experience hunger often find it difficult to concentrate and focus, affecting their memory and cognitive abilities. This can also lead to behavioral issues, affecting their interactions with others and their overall development.

Poor nutrition can significantly affect a child’s physical development, leading to a lack of energy, poor growth, and an increased likelihood of illness.

Rickets returned to the UK in 2013:

According to the NHS Choices website, rickets “is a condition that affects bone development in children. It causes the bones to become soft and malformed, which can lead to bone deformities.

“The most common cause of rickets is a lack of vitamin D and calcium. Vitamin D comes from foods such as oily fish and eggs, and from sunlight on our skin. Vitamin D is essential for a child to form strong and healthy bones.

“Rickets causes the bones to become painful, soft and weak. This leads to deformities of the skeleton, such as bowed legs, curvature of the spine and thickening of the ankles, wrists and knees.”

The disease was thought to have been eradicated in the UK but, in a damning indictment of modern political priorities, chief medical officer Dame Sally Davies has admitted that 40 per cent of our children – that’s two-fifths of all the children in the country – now have some kind of vitamin D deficiency. Current figures for full-blown rickets are not available.

Other diseases on the rise included gout, TB, measles, scurvy, beriberi and whooping cough.

Is it any wonder that the government’s new review is calling for work to safeguard children’s health? The Tories have been working hard to cause problems that will plague our population for decades to come.
